Huawei Ascend P1It's one of the thinnest and lightest smartphones we've played with thus far.
What's hot: With 7.6mm profiles and just 110 grams on scale, the Ascend P1 is undoubtedly one of the thinnest and lightest smartphones we've played with thus far. The TI OMAP 4460 chipset and two 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 cores allow this Huawei to perform well; it got a benchmark score of 6100 in AnTuTu. To put that number into perspective, take note that the quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III netted 10,198 in the same benchmark suite. The Super AMOLED touchscreen is huge at 4.3 inches and looks vibrant as ever. Corning's Gorilla Glass figures to be an important feature for the clumsy types (us included). The 8-megapixel rear-facing camera takes great photos and 1080p footage, plus its touch-to-focus feature works nicely.
What's not: Its thinness and lightness come at the expense of a high-capacity battery. The included 4GB flash storage may not be enough to hold your MP3 collection; however, in all fairness, the microSD expansion slot, which supports cards up to 32GB, is a great equalizer. The 960 x 540-pixel count feels a tad inferior than handsets boasting 1280 x 720 displays.
Availability: This week. See the Ascend P1's specs here.
Huawei Ascend P1 LTEThe Ascend P1--with LTE.
What's hot: LTE support = capable of ultra-fast download speeds. The Ascend P1 LTE keeps the non-LTE version's innards, but this time, it's sporting a bigger battery to counter current LTE chips' propensity to eat up battery life more than their 3G counterparts. It's noticeably easier to hold in one hand, too, thanks to its gentle curves and textured back cover. Much to our surprise, this model sticks mostly to the vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich experience, which is a welcome departure from most OEM-produced Android skins. The black trim circling the lens cover is a small yet notable accent.
What's not: Again, the built-in 4GB storage and the 960 x 540-pixel resolution may be disappointing to some.
Huawei Ascend D1 LTEThe panel's IPS+ tech delivers wide viewing angles, good visibility outdoors, and Retina-pleasing colors.
What's hot: This model is the biggest LTE-ready variant of the current Ascend line in the Philippines. It packs the same silicon as the P1 and P1 LTE's, except with a bigger--but not necessarily better--4.5-inch real estate. The panel's IPS+ tech delivers wide viewing angles, good visibility outdoors, and Retina-pleasing colors. The camera's backside-illuminated sensor promises better low-light performance.
What's not: The design scheme is uninspired in most places; a bit of variety would have gone a long way into livening up the Ascend D1 LTE's plain design. Also, there's too much gloss here.
